Podiatric Program Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: Is the PM&S-36 residency program fully approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education
A: Yes. The PM&S-36 program obtained approval beginning July 1, 2006. The next on- site visit is scheduled for the fall of 2012.
- Q: Is participating in the clerkship program essential to attaining a residency position?
A: No. The clerkship is primarily an educational experience aimed at helping you to develop your academic and clinical skills. However, the rotation does allow the attending podiatrists serving on the residency selection committee the opportunity to assess your knowledge of podiatric medicine and surgery in a variety of situations. Therefore, common sense dictates that you should perform to the best of your ability during the externship.
- Q: Can the clerkship hurt my chances of attaining a residency position?
A: Yes and no. If you demonstrate problems with attendance, punctuality, attitude and/or knowledge, it will not help your chances. Conversely, if you perform well, it will increase your chances of being selected.
- Q: Do I have to interview for the program if I have completed the clerkship?
A: Yes. The interview allows you to share experiences that may have occurred after your clerkship program concluded. It also gives you the opportunity to summarize your qualifications and express your desires. We have found that the formal interview is to your benefit.
- Q: Can I interview at the hospital?
A: No. All interviews are held at the East CRIP, again, to your advantage.
- Q: Does the residency program select from only certain schools?
A: No. Applicants from all podiatry schools are considered equally. We give no preference to any particular school(s).
- Q: Is there a website for the residency and clerkship programs?
A: Yes. More information about both programs can be found at: http://www.eastorange.va.gov/services/podiatry.asp
