PM&S-36 Residency Program Rotation Goals & Summaries
2009 - 2010 Training Year
Rotation: Anesthesiology
Rotation Duration:
• PGY 1 Residents
• 2 weeks
• Begins on the 1st of the month – ends on the 15th of the month OR.
• Begins on the 16th of the month – ends on the last day of the month.
• Mon – Fri, 7AM until dismissed.
Goal: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to have developed an understanding of how the various types of anesthesia are used in the management of medical and surgical conditions when indicated, including local and general, spinal, epidural, regional, and conscious sedation anesthesia.
Rotation: Behavioral Science
Rotation Duration:
• PGY1 Residents
• 2 weeks
• Begins on the 1st of the month – ends on the 15th of the month.
• Mon – Fri, 8:00AM – 5:00PM.
• First day, report to Psychiatry Service office, 12th floor, 8:00AM.
Goal: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be able to describe and discuss the psychiatric workup and treatment options.
Rotation: Dermatology
Rotation Duration:
• PGY1 Residents
• 1 month
• Monday (General Clinic), 8:30AM until dismissed (approx 11:00 – 11:30AM).
• Tuesday, (Surgical Clinic) 8:30AM until dismissed (approx 1:00 – 2:00PM).
Goal: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to have developed an understanding of how dermatologic conditions are evaluated, classified, diagnosed and managed both surgically and non-surgically.
Rotation: Emergency Medicine I

Goal: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to recognize common emergency events and function in the care of the acute patient with podiatric and non-podiatric conditions.

• 2 weeks (PGY2 training year)
• Begins on the 1st of the month – ends on the 15th of the month or:

Goal: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to recognize common emergency events and function in the care of the acute patient with podiatric and non-podiatric conditions. This PGY2 rotation builds upon experiences obtained in the PGY1 residency year.
Rotation: General Surgery

Goal: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to be able to accurately work-up and diagnosis general surgical disorders, develop an appropriate management plan and perform as surgical assistant.

Goal: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to be able to describe the clinical syndromes associated with infectious disease, how those conditions affect the lower extremity, psychosocial implications and referral options. The resident will also gain an understanding of how micro-organisms are identified utilizing various techniques.
Rotation: Medical Imaging
Rotation Duration:
• 2 weeks

Goal: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to have developed an understanding of how various medical imaging studies are interpreted in the diagnosis and ongoing management of medical conditions.
Rotation: Medicine
Rotation Duration:
• 2 Months
• Mon – Fri, usually 7:00 AM – 5:00PM or until dismissed.
• On-call every 4th day including weekends. Usually dismissed at 8:00PM on on-call days.
Goals: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to:
1. be able to perform a complete history and physical examination and articulate the role of the podiatrist in the complete medical care of the patient.
2. have developed an understanding of how the various medical imaging modalities are used and interpreted in the diagnosis and ongoing management of medical conditions.
3. be able to describe, order and interpret the results of diagnostic laboratory tests and examinations.

Goal: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be capable of evaluating, diagnosing, and treating both adult and pediatric patients with locomotor deformities caused by congenital, neurological, and heritable factors. The resident will develop skills in the prescription and/or fabrication, dispensing, and modification of corrective shoes, foot orthosis and lower extremity braces. The resident will develop an understanding and appreciation for the importance of the lower extremity arthrometric and gait evaluation.

Goal: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to have developed an understanding of how specimens are evaluated via gross examination and microscopically.
Rotation: Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Rotation Duration:

b. Mon – Fri, 7:00AM until dismissed.
This multi-month experience occurs through the VANJHCS, East Orange Campus under the direction of Julia M. McCall, DPM. Residents will also work under the direction of W. Aaron Broyles, DPM, Joseph G. Green, DPM, and John Milano, DPM. The resident will provide direct care to inpatients and outpatients in the podiatry clinic, inpatient rooms and the emergency room. Training experiences will include performing problem-focused history and physical examinations, performing biomechanical evaluations and managing patients with lower extremity disorders, and ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies. Residents will evaluate, diagnose, formulate differential diagnoses, and treat a wide variety of acute and chronic foot and ankle conditions and trauma. The resident will be expected to become more independent in patient care management as training progresses.
Goal 1: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to obtain and analyze patient data, formulate a differential diagnosis and develop and implement a management plan.
Goal 2: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to demonstrate the ability to perform a complete biomechanical exam and formulate and implement a management plan.
Goal 3: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to have prepared and properly delivered two, formal PowerPoint lectures to his/her peers on a medical/surgical topic.
Rotation: VA Podiatric Medicine II
Rotation Duration (PGY 3 Year):
• Approx 9 months
• Mon – Fri, 7:00AM until dismissed.
This multi-month experience occurs through the VANJHCS, East Orange Campus under the direction of John Milano, DPM. Residents will also work under the direction of W. Aaron Broyles, DPM, Joseph G. Green, DPM and Julia M. McCall, DPM. The resident will be expected to become more independent in the management of non-surgical podiatric cases as training progresses.
Goal 1: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to demonstrate the ability to independently evaluate and diagnose non-surgical podiatric cases.
Goal 2: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident should have developed advanced diagnostic and treatment skills in podiatric medicine. Additionally, the resident will have demonstrated teaching skills by assisting in the education of first and second year residents and podiatry externs in primary podiatric medicine.
Goal 3: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to have prepared and properly delivered two, formal PowerPoint lectures to his/her peers on a medical/surgical topic.
Rotation: VA Podiatric Surgery I

Goal: Upon completion of this experience the podiatric resident will be expected to be able to demonstrate:
1. ability to accurately work-up and diagnosis vascular disorders, develop an appropriate management plan and perform as surgical assistant.
2. an understanding of the management of preoperative and postoperative surgical patients with emphasis on complications.
3. enhanced surgical skills, such as suturing, retracting, and performing surgical procedures under appropriate supervision.
4. an understanding of surgical procedures and principles applicable to vascular surgery cases.
